small boats distance
« on: September 21, 2010, 09:54:00 pm »
how far does one go out in the small boats, boat fishing has certainly come on somewhat to when i used to go out on the aqua stars frm hartlepool etc it sounds real fun and very enjoyable your own boss wreck fishing.

roughly on a good weather day is about 8 mile the limit or does it also depend on size of engine you have on.

i know very little on this subject.

Guess it depends, I'd say 8mile is the extreme end, I've been about 6ish miles out (accidentally) and it's a canny 'ol way to motor back in, the main consideration is fuel and wind, even a mild westerly isn't something I'd want to row back against.

The average session is probably between a mile or two, often going out deep just means whiting, unless hitting wrecks of course.

Though it also really depends on who you're asking, some lads me and parrot know habitually go out a fair few miles while others drop anchor 250 to 500 yards from the shore!

Same as it used to be John, try the easy marks first ,if you're catching why move on.When I was going off Redcar in a boat the first shot was within a mile then work you're way towards boulby if nowhere was fishing about 5 mile was the furthest we fished, remember going out to 13 one time but that was straight out from Redcar on a coble 30 footer and we'd been told the fish were around 12 mile out, bagged up that day full to the gunnels in about 5 hrs,a rare good payday
I'm not a complete idiot there's bits missing

on a small boat i would stick around the 3 mile mark , make sure of the weather etc, been out 15 mile on our old  32 foot coble, but me old man is a very good and experienced skipper and navigator , would go about 3 mile in our 18 foot double ender fishing rough ground , round the hendon to seaham area

dont really need to go far,we tend to stick to 2-3 miles at the most, sometimes the rock edges fish as well as anywhere else,it all depends on the tides as same as the shore, theres 1 or 2 wrecks close in to where we fish as well what normally hold a fish or two,on a good day i sometimes venture a bit further out but in a small boat you have to watch what your doing as we all know how quick the sea can change,,Davy..
should have been here yesterday,,hahaha.
