Gutted,,
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:49:47 am »
Toybota is in drydock possibly out of action for what's left of the season,
After an afternoon session which turned out crap on landing a series of freak swells came crashing in both swamping the boat while crunching the boat into it's trailer and smashing me in the chest throwing me a good 6ft through the air and 10ft up the beach, end result big ffn holes, crunched fibreglass  :dummy: and a sore chest where I got smacked one  :bang:

I've been intending on doing some minor hull work anyway come the end of the season, but my hand has been forced, looks like it's major hull work this week (if the weather stays off  that is  )

if the weather is bad do you want to use my garage jer?  air line , power tools , spray gear and infra-red drying gear  for speed

may not hold water as good as the boat but should make an interesting sea craft  :cm1:
if in danger or in doubt run around and scream and shout

Took an angle grinder and drill to the hull today, carved out the damaged areas and found a nice piece of previous owner repair work  looks like instead of repairing a crack a previous owner simply blobbed araldite along the crack, for all araldite is pretty good gear it doesn't repair boats too well, the glass immediately around the 'repair' had a mild case of osmosis so that got cut out aswell and I'm intending on repairing it properly.
Slightly scary yet satisfying to take an angle grinder to the boats hull  :ash22:

Chears Davey I appreciate the offer, I'm heading over to east coast fibreglass supplies tomorrow to grip 5litres of resin + woven roven and some chopped glass matting, I also need to do some much needed work on the keel, so the gunnels and cuddy are coming off tomorrow hopfully and the hull is going to be flipped over and even more angle grinder action will ensue lol (hence needing quite a bit resin).

One thing I'm on the hunt for is some sort of flat plastic strip like gas board grade plastic to use along the base of the keel as re-enforcing/protection, I'm struggling for something suitable that won't simply rust and give me more bother later.

Photo's so far for those remotely interested  ;)

Initial damage after 1st getting boat up the beach,

After I'd opened the buoyancy tank and cut clean holes out around the damaged area,

would window sill plastic work for this ?  comes in good size lengths and is around 8mm thick , fair abrasion resistance too

I would say no,Baz,window sill plastic or fascia boards, can be quite hard wearing but they do become brittle and can shatter :(

i suppose your lucky in 2 ways ,1 youv not ended up in hospital,2 the damage is repairable .you wouldnt be able to repair your boat if you had ended up in hospital.
i tand to go with chris on the facia boards, but wouldnt a company that does these put you in touch with someone that can get what you want, there was a place at the top of the team vally near the stores.amari plastics off dukesway west.
sorry i cant be more helpfullbut i hope you get it fixed quickish as theres not to much of the summer left.
of all the things iv lost,
only my mind needs to be found.

I thought window facia/cill boards were also hollow baz? they were when I used to fit them anyway.

Went through east coast fibreglass today and like you davey bought FAR too much gear, I bought 10 litres of resin, 2 Kilo of chopped matting load of woven roven and that silky smooth finishing cloth.
Now I need to think of imaginative uses for fibreglass lol.

Me and scho removed the gunnels and cuddy from the boat today so we could flip the hull over, put 5 layers of 480 gram chopped matting on from the outside (pieces shaped to hole getting progressively bigger, the end result once it sets will be thicker than the surrounding hull, once set I'm going to sand it down to be smooth with the hull then stick some of that nice silky smooth finishing cloth gear on, aswell as repair the keel sword which was the aforementioned 'minor hull work, but since I've removed the previous owners god awful repair job looks more major than anticipated, but that's in hand.

Once exterior underside of hull is painted I'm intending on slapping a layer of woven roven matting over the inside of the patched holes along with another 3 layers of 480gram matting,,, it'll end up being the strongest part of the hull. always best to be over cautious than under imho.

Anyway, patched holes when I left this evening waiting for resin to go off.

There is a noticeable bulge around the edges that's to be expected, and will be sanded down once dry.
