Walkway 11/08/10

Hi all, been out of the region for a while since joining the Navy 5 years ago and thought it would be good to get me gear out from about 8 years ago and get in some fishing over the summer. Needless to say I've got the bug again...

Being based in yeovil the best place for me to fish is Weymouth and i've been getting stuck into a bit of bass fishing down the south coast over the past year. I haven't touched any sea fishing other than this since i was a kid so i headed off to one of the spots i used to go to on the walkway armed with some lug tipped with mackerel. Arrived down there at around 3am and fished until about 7. Lots of bites and managed to pull in a codling just under at 32cm. I wasn't expecting to get anything  having not fished for so long, so that one fish was enough to get me back in the swing.! I did however find it tackle hungry down there and wondered if anyone had any tips or good rigs to help reduce the loss of gear. I was using a simple long range rig with a 5oz grip.

Promising to see and hear of plenty of codling which could point to some healthy sized cod this winter.

Pete

Well done on the Codling mate and cheers for the pics, the really big tides will be partly responsible for the snags, hell of a tide rip there on any tide over a 4.7m and the last couple of flood tides are well over the 5.0m,still get the odd fish out but ideally i fish there on the smaller tides, lose a lot less gear and you can hold the bottom further out into the main channel :up22:

The middle part of the walk way is not as snaggy as the beginning bit
(between the the wood jettys.) like Chris say small tide fish better.

Well done on getting a codling out mate.  trink22

hello mate welcome to the site.1st time fishing on the walkway and ya get a fish ,not bad going mate.has already been said sometimes you get snagged up sometimes ya dont .the place to be is just after the jettys going towards the ferry landing, just after the 2nd jetty look on the posts and you will see 2xx between these right in front 15 feet either side is snag free(unless big tides were you will get pulled around) anywere else and you take your chances .you will find that most of the snaggs are about 40 metres from the walkway and the best bet is to cast mid river and on the retreive lift your gear and reel in as fast as possable, and hopefully avoid the snaggs .other than that get some strips of metal n drill a hole in it and make a rotten bottom so you will lose minimal gear.
of all the things iv lost,
only my mind needs to be found.

Try using pulley rigs aswell it'll cut you're losses down on rough ground.
I'm not a complete idiot there's bits missing
