Hendon Fishquay 18-12-10
« on: December 18, 2010, 08:16:32 pm »
Well gents, this was a new mark for me and the man Ellis and what else can be said but what a cracking little spot.
Arrived at 10.45 and we had the gear set up and baits in the water by 11.00. No sooner had my bait hit the bottom, i got a little knock swiftly follwed by a nice big knock.Struck it and FISH ON. Brought in a nice yting just under size so it was safely returned.Rebaited and out it went.Keith had nothing first cast but then a lovely bite second cast which he unfortunately didn't convert. Then on his 3 cast he got a lovely strong knock and it was FISH ON...Brought in a lovely Flounder just on a lb.We continued to fish til 3pm.Had knock after knock uptil high water,Keith managed 2 Flounder and 3 coalie. I managed 2 yting.
As HW hit it allwent quiet and the crabs took over.No further fish out after HW but i did catch Keiths snapped of shockleader and all his gear so it was a canny day allround.
A lovely spot to fish and i reckon could fish really well after a good storm and stir up.Bait used on the day was frozen ragworm( i had the fridge temp set too low) :cm1:

I was totally out fished and Keith christened his Ian Golds Rod in STYLE.....well done mate

Well done, sounds like a canny session, are you sure it was a Plaice and not just a spotted flounder?
Not meaning to be cheeky at all just when I've asked the glassy mafia in the past they all say the same thing you don't get plaice up there it's flounders with orange spots (the odd report are always this time of year too as the flounders start to migrate to spawn and some do tend to get more pronounced orange spots).

Either way, good to see something getting caught! nice one.

I checked the internet for pictures of a plaice and what Keith pulled out was definitely the same as the pics i found.

I checked the internet for pictures of a plaice and what Keith pulled out was definitely the same as the pics i found.

Not being funny but if you're basing identification on internet photo's I'd definitely say it was a flounder with orange spots (given the river is full of them at the moment), I'm not ashamed to admit from a photo I'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between a spawning (bright orange spots) flounder and a plaice, I've chucked good plaice back thinking they were flounders because the spots weren't prominent enough to later discover the spots are only an indication not the definite.

As I say I'm not taking the pee or being awkward, telling the difference isn't that simple, you could put a plaice and a flounder in-front of a lot of anglers and they would take a wild guess and if one had more prominent spots than the other they'd point at the spotted fish being a plaice which isn't necessarily right.

Some pics of spotted flounders on another fishing site LINK

This is a toppa bit of info on the difference between flounders and plaice from same site, well worth a read! LINK
