Where the cod are
« on: December 08, 2010, 08:48:25 pm »
Just been reading a report from one of the top whitby charter skippers on why the catches have been poor on the inshore marks. Most the fish caught have been full of sandeels, he says that on the sounders they've been getting big shoals of eels on all the inshore marks and says the reason for the poor catches are the cod are feeding off the bottom gorging themselves on the eels.
Also the longliners have had poor catches but the netter's are catching well, another sign the fish have come off the bottom.Any thought's on this Lad's.

Well if this it true Trev, it may be worth trying 2 or 3 hook flapper rigs, fitted with short snoods.Rag/lu/macci on the bottom 1 and then sandeel jellies on the upper 2 hooks.
Anyone can fish......It's Catching them that's the hard part.

2011 SPECIES CAUGHT:  Coalie x3(biggest 33.5cm), Rockling x6, Blenny x1, Flounder x1, Whiting x1

same happened last year Trev, hectic start to the season for some and then the same stories came in,that the fish were not moving inshore as vast shoals of sandeels offshore,to be honest fish feed off shore as well and the main food source for cod is other fish all year round,a lot of the fish i have caught this year have been stuffed with sand eels but have still taken worm, crab baits inshore, think we all at times here stories of what fish are feeding on offshore/inshore....if we took notice of everything we hear...we would not go fishing.........would not worry too much about it mate....still plenty billets about :TNGGGY:

Be billet bashing somewhere tomorrow, still to decide where most the rockmarks are still to bad to get to so might venture north. I do hope those cod don't make a nuisance of themselves while I'm trying to get my billet quota whistle
