Twas a bright and chilly winters eve as we arrived at our destination. The sky was as clear as a pint of ice cold stella and the sea looked inviting like a woman with no morals. There was no sign of vampires but the Wolf was hungry for fish
We got set up and lines were in the water for 7pm,started off with using just ragworm.Within 5 minutes Keith found out how far a Sonik sk4 would bend before the butt raised offf the ground and what a cracking bite it was, had to surely be a cod.Keith struck it like a man possessed hoping for his frst cod of the season and reeled it in.Much to our suprise when it came a shore,a flattie just on a 1lb in weight.Greedy bugger had taken a full rag on a 3/0 hook.
A good start you are all thinking and yes it was and it was to become a very sucessful night.
Ragworm was useless and so was rag tipped with maccie but when we both changed over to maccie on its own it was tremendous. It was a fish a cast between us all night and it didn't matter whether you just did a gentle lob at 50 yards or my favourite 120 yard chuck, the fish were there and very hungry. They may have been all yting but what the hell when the sport is this good.
All in all at the end of the night, the tally was 20 fish caught,8 whiting kept, all well over size and ranging from 1 and a half lb to 2 and a quarter lb.1 flattie kept and 12 yting returned to fight another day.
Last cast of the night for me was a strange 1, bait sat out for 10 minutes and then i had a knock that nearly took my rod out of the tripod and nearly snapped the tip off.I struck at it and started to wind, the tip of the rod going mental as i winded in.I managed to retrieve about 50 yards with the rod tip dancing allover like a lapdancer doing a private show then it just went dead.I continued to reel in and when i got my gear back i took a look at the trace. new 35lb trace cut clean through like it had been done with a pair of snips and it was halfway up the trace length. What it was i don't know but i do know it was BIG.
