Like any other right minded person I think it's an utter disgrace the amount of fish that are thrown back dead, but... here is the cruncher, if we allow the fisherman to land those 'extra' fish, I'm willing to bet there will be more cod getting netted up 'accidentally' and that just exasperates the problem.

I honestly don't think there is a simple solution but I do know one thing asking the EU (in this case it's CFP) to reform is about as much use as trying to revive those fish with calming music and smelling salts.

Is there an actual idea here or just rhetoric? by which I mean I would like to end world hunger but no matter how many people I get to agree with me I haven't got a clue how to go about it, the same seems to apply here no credible (in fact ANY) idea has been tabled to reform the quota system that I can find, abolition of the quota system would be catastrophic for fish stocks I've got my own thoughts on possible solutions but I also know it's peeing in the wind because the EU style system is so deeply ingrained in people that true alternatives won't be given the time of day.

I've done a bit digging on this one and aside from Hugh going to Brussels and meeting people sweet FA has or will change, all anyone can seem to agree on is discards are a disgrace, well that's hardly news worthy what's the realistic solution? because neither Hugh or any of his merry men have given any clue that I've been able to find.

Sorry to pee on the bombfire  :SCARED@:

your probably right Jer,cant find much else on the topic, however it is a start and i think the discards is something which boils every ones pish, dont know what will come of this petition or wether the end result will be a positive one for fish stocks, think there is about 20 thousand signed up so far and i am one of them,Might be a case of Hugh getting an agreement to keep all the discards and making everyone a giant fish pie River cottage style. :o

Still doesn't put any meat on the bone unfortunately,

I applaud Hugh for his dedication to this and as most of you probably already know he's a keen angler himself along with his best mate (and college on river cottage) Nick Fisher (aka main guy on fishing show 'Screaming Reels' and radio show 'Dirty Tackle'), I just wish there was something substantial to this campaign other than headline grabbing,
