What Line?
« on: October 21, 2010, 09:55:59 pm »
I'm on the hunt for a new reel line, mainly for beach fishing where overall strength isn't as important as it might be in mixed to rough ground.

It'll probably help if I list what I've used and what I think of them.

Ultima F1, good line low diameter though a bit stiff and wirey casts well but availability and price are an issue (I'm not willing to buy it of ebay as I'm not in the mood for buying garbage re-badged as F1)

Ultima Red Ice & Black Ice, same cak different colours, has a horrible tendency to snap where you don't expect it i.e.  maybe near your rig but more likely half way between rodtip and snagged rig meaning re-spooling becomes a every other session thing, also doesn't have good abrasion resistance.

Ultima Power Plus, good line in freshwater, infact I swear by it for my Barbel, Pike etc fishing but in salt water on a multiplier it's not so clever slight fluff hitting side of spool shreds the line, it's cheaper cousin 'Ultima Power' has same problems by all accounts.

Dawia Sensor, cheap and cheerful, unfortunately beds badly kinks itself on the spool I find and far too high diameter per BS-lbs.

Berkley Big Game mono, I had this on my 525mag years ago and quite liked it but it was only 15lb-ish which for the fishing I was doing wasn't fit for purpose, I've had limited other experience with the line so any opinions welcome.

Some Yellow something or other  :D not the actual product name, a reel I got of BazW had this on, seemed pretty good untill I let 100+ yards of it fly into the north sea up craster one day. so never really got to put it through it's paces any enlightenment what this line might have been baz? was on that 6500 Elite (mag) I got of you?

Braid of all kinds is a no no, too fidly too expensive and one fluff means back to the bank.

Any other lines anyone can suggest I'm all ears, I've tried a few others some cheap lines I won't bother mentioning as I'm a bit of a tart when it comes to line  ;)

using ultima f1 at the mo...seems canny.........Okuma what davy mentioned, was using this last year ....rutherfords two for a fiver, never had any problems with it,Stren stamina......not sure if you can still get it.....the name says it all....very hard wearing line....can be a bit embarrassing if you get into a snag as it refuses to snap and thats 15lb line

Never had any knot problems to be honest baz, though I habitually wet my knots before pulling them tight (hang up from freshwater fishing).

Suffix Titanium a friend has used for Barbel fishing it's WAAAAAAAY under rated break strain, his 15lb wouldn't break until nearer 20lb of pressure.

ebay is outa bounds as far as I'm concerned for buying line, once bit twice shy except I was bit a couple of times lol.

Chears for feedback though.
