River Wear 17th July
« on: July 18, 2010, 07:05:24 pm »
I don't do catch reports any-more, but seeing as it's a new site I'll get the ball rolling in this section with a report of last nights session.

Got to around 10PM sitting in bored I thought to heck with it I'll take a drive through Durham and do a spot of Barbel fishing, recent rains have put a touch of colour in the river which sometimes helps, but as always Barbel fishing is far from an exacting science even when conditions seem perfect if the Barbel don't want to play it's a blanking session.

As it happened conditions mightn't have been great to start with, pretty much every peg was occupied and sea trout anglers were wading through the rest of the river, I managed to squeeze into one peg where I had to keep warning sea trout anglers off from wading through by flashing my head torch at them but it was comfortable all the same, an hour in and the rod went over I felt a good weight on the end but it wasn't to be the rod sprang straight as the hook slipped, not feeling put off I was convinced the fish didn't get a chance to spook the swim out so I flicked the same bait back out into the same glide.

While chatting to Scho who came through for a chat and to watch me blank I noticed my rod go over into an alarming bend in the stand, a good fish was on, that done what Barbel do best scream up and down the river diving towards bushes, trees and every other obstruction within lunging distance after a good scrap I slid the net under a cracking fin perfect 11lb 1oz Barbel, unfortunately I'd taken my camera out of the bag just before going out and had to rely on my phones camera which has a flash which is about as effective a chocolate fire-guard.

Chears lads,
I've lost more Barbel than I've caught this year (lost another good one tonight but sort of compensated with a couple of chub to 4lb 4oz) but that's all part of the game really.

@Skinny, never liked Carp fishing, pigs with fins imho, I don't mind Tench fishing on stillwaters but my 1st love has always been on rivers and increasingly boats too  ;D

watched talking tackle a couple of times and they do pull out some monster fish ,upto 49lb one fish and they looked like they had to much radioactive waste, ugly looking .probs going to end up fresh water fishing, lakes and such as i cant get around as much as id like.
