I agree totally on your views. I have to admit that I was really shocked by the amount of litter left by people on the piers. No the wonder peoples opinion of sea anglers is stigmatised.

Even more shocked and had to speak to a young lad when I saw his way of getting a crab off his hook. (with his kicking boot)

This sounds a bit fishy (pardon the pun) as the 1st thing that sprung to mind was, a fishing hook would be dissolved by stomach acids surely?

I've read and heard more than a couple of urban legends, fishing is not exempt to this either.

See where ya coming from Jer but if the dog is in distress then ya cant just wait till the hook dissolved.

But ya never know it could be true or just a load of crap but ya do find discarded hook with bait
on the beach so realy there's no excuse.

I know ya get snap off but really ya cant get them back.

Just down to yer normal dicks who'll cut the hook off an leave it instead of stripping the old bait off and taking the rig home or binning it.

Actually the more I think about it the more this seems like an urban legend,
I can understand not wanting to wait until the hook dissolves, but we're talking about someone's pet and a professional vet here, the vet would surely realise, hang on dogs eat all sorts of crap including bits of metal and it breaks down, yeah the dog might be a bit poorly for a few days but the barb of the hook will be gone within a day (stomach acids are quite nasty!) and the rest of the hook will break down by the end of the week if it hadn't already passed through it's system.

Also, who cuts off their hook with bait still on? I don't believe I've ever even heard of anyone doing that, not saying it doesn't happen but is it really so common?

I'm also thinking of Ian's dog which went in his fishing bag and gorged itself on halibut pellets which were on hair rigs (including hooks, bit line and swivels) it devoured several as I recall to little to no ill effect.

I'm defo in the 'it's a urban legend' camp  whistle

im seeing your side of it now jer,as read the guys dog had the hook in its gut ,if it had been in the mouth or throat then it would have been taken out by the vet and not cost that much.
still doesn't take away the blame for discarding hooks /bags /general shuot.how many wildlife animals likes of the swans /seagulls,etc  suffer from line left by irresponsible" anglers"(im being polite)
