weight making

if you have ever wanted to make your own weight but dont know were to start this is for you
first thing it the equipment,
a bottle of propane,
a gas boiling ring,
a pan
a ladle
a mould clamp
and your mould

start off by lighting the boiling ring, then put you pan on, then start to add your lead,
you can see once the lead is melted you will have slag off the lead, this needs to be removed by skimming the surface with the ladel,


once the lead is upto the right temperature it will look like a blue colour


befor you start casting your weight you have to get the mould upto temperature, so just pur some lead into it a couple of times to get it heated up,
once the mould is heated up you can then start to cast you weights
so for this i have used a namix mould to show you,
so put the eye and bait clip into the grove in the mould and then put the other half on top of it to keep the eye and bait clip in place

 then using you mould clam to keep the two halfs of the mould together, then in this pic you can see how it looks and you can also seeme putting the wire into the holes in the mould for the grip wires.

then you need you ladel and scoop up some lead out of the pan and pour it through the hole in the toip of you mould like i have done in this pic.

untill its just coming out of the holes you poured you lead into as showen in this pic


allow to stand for about 10 seconds to allow the lead to harden, then remove the wire in the grip wire holes and remove the clamp, then split the mould again to see the formed weight in side as showen in this pic

the extra bit of lead thats sticking out can now be removed as showen in this pic

then you have you lead just needing the grip wire, so for this am using 18 gauge 7 inch stainless steel grip wire for this,
on your weight you will be able to see 4 holes in the weight where the wires were going throught the mould, this is were you want to put your grip wre as showen in this pic,

once through bend the wires like ive done in this pic

then add the roller tubes as ive done here

then do the other other hole in the same way,
for storge in you seat box ect i normaly leave them like in this pic .

then when you want to use then get some pliers and bend the legs as needed as showen in this pic

and here it is the finished weight ready for fishing with

Nice topic, eddie Namex mould 7inch wires and yellow rollers,, think i should be on commision,, only joking my friend,,There is a lot of info there for anybody trying this for the first time. The only thing i can add is the mould like eddie said should be hot if not hot lead going into a mould what is cold will solidify on contact and will hurt when it explodes,,,,             ,,,Bri,,

I make all of my own gripper in 5oz,6oz and 7oz. I make 5&6oz plain leads and 1%2oz drilled bullets for float fishing. All of my grippers have bait clip loops built in and are fitted with rollers and strong wires.

I never melt my lead in an open pan either. This can be exceptionally dangerous if there is any water droplets trapped in the lead you are melting. This can cause dangerous splattering. I always use a covered pan or mainly I use a stainless steel catering size teapot with flip top lid.

that stainless steel tea pot idea works a treat dave i tried it out the other day when i made a few sinker.

Toppa sinker as well will be getting a few 1/2oz bullets off ya.
