Advice needed
« on: December 27, 2010, 07:47:42 pm »
Hello

Getting back into the sea fishing after a long spell in the coarse arena. Looking to get into the matches on the tyne and wear? any advice on clubs & opens?

next to tackle, ive always used a 4-8oz rod but now question do i really need to sling 6oz of lead to hold bottom?

venues i plan to fish are the r. wear sand point/glass centre/town bridge & r.tyne business park / hebburn / walkway  .... would a bass rod do with 4oz grippa?

cheers
nick :fish:

I always use a 6oz gripper when fishing the wear opposite the glass centre.IMHO i would rather have a rod capable of casting the heavier weights as well as the light ones.My beachcaster is 4-8oz so it gives you more scope than a rod that will just cast a 4oz lead.
Anyone can fish......It's Catching them that's the hard part.

2011 SPECIES CAUGHT:  Coalie x3(biggest 33.5cm), Rockling x6, Blenny x1, Flounder x1, Whiting x1

Few of the lad's on hear fish Ryehope club comps they're probably the best ones to talk to as for the rod choice I would still fish most of those marks with a 5 oz sinker  other people will have there own preferences.

Nick. if you are local to me you can have a bash at chucking my old shaky 4-8oz if ya want. Its light and a bit soft at the tip so you get good bite detection.

i fished tyne/wear match circuit in mid 90s  found i cud cover 90 percent ov marks usin acentury bass nearest equivalent is l/d tornado   capable ov pendulum 4 oz 200  yrds but more important  cud b used  at golden lion with 1 0z ball.   the match scene has changed a lot  since then tho,  a lot ov matchesin summer target under sized fish (catch n release) so maybe a lighter rod wud b better 4 wear

when fishin the wear 4 flatties u shud rarely  use more than 4 0z i used 2 cut grips dwn 2an inch   so it was easy to twitch bait,    flatties r  predators and vry inquisitive  moving yr sinker 6 inches stirrs silt  , fish move in  often resultin in bite same tactics can work with yts

4oz weight adequate for the wear and as john says lads use a lot less when fishing the upper reaches, the tyne i would not use anything less than a 5 oz as the tide pull is a lot greater, probably pay to take an assortment of leads with you so you can change to adapt to the tide and weather conditions,if you need to put a bait out seventy eighty yards and the wind is in your face then a six/seven oz lead is going to help with the distance, just all depends on what rod your using

aye this all rings true with my previous exp. of flounder bashing, maybe i need to bite the bullet and buy a flattie/bass rod and a beachcaster.

Thanks for the offer of lending the rod mate but i have dug out me old shakey turboflex from me dads garage having sold up a few yrs ago its the only rod i didnt get rid!! the century tt, g1 & conoflex flattie fanatic went.... i loved them all.thinking about it, i reckon that ff would have done a 5oz lead - it had a bit of backbone!
