Lugworms
« on: July 16, 2010, 07:40:44 pm »
Lugworms can be found around most beaches in the british isles and over some muddy brackish estuaries but mainly they inhabit clean sandy beaches, the best times to dig these are in the winter months when they have slowed down and spawned in the spring and summer months the worms are higher up in the sand and there fore easier to dig however they have a tendency to be milky and fish sometimes don't like them like this, lugworms will take almost every sea fish that swims in the uk,bait a pennel rig up with a dozen or so and these make an ideal cod or Bass bait fished over mixed and clean ground, tip them of with a large section of shell fish for over the rough ground for best results, blow lugworm are fairly common and keep best though small they sometimes outfish the big black lugworm and yellowtails. If finding bait beds it is wise to keep them to yourself as most are localised and can be out dug within a few tides if groups of diggers go to them. Lugworms will keep in seawater a month if the water is clean and changed every day or two, keep the seawater in the same fridge as the lugworm this way the water will be the same temperature as what the lugworms are being kept in. Keep them in cat litter trays,in small amounts with just enough fresh seawater to cover them, black lugworm and yellowtail lugworm are harder to keep however black lugworm and yellowtail lugworms may be gutted and frozen in newspaper and again make a great bait for when fresh lugworm is hard to source.
