Guess it depends, I'd say 8mile is the extreme end, I've been about 6ish miles out (accidentally) and it's a canny 'ol way to motor back in, the main consideration is fuel and wind, even a mild westerly isn't something I'd want to row back against.

The average session is probably between a mile or two, often going out deep just means whiting, unless hitting wrecks of course.

Though it also really depends on who you're asking, some lads me and parrot know habitually go out a fair few miles while others drop anchor 250 to 500 yards from the shore!
