One thing I'm on the hunt for is some sort of flat plastic strip like gas board grade plastic to use along the base of the keel as re-enforcing/protection, I'm struggling for something suitable that won't simply rust and give me more bother later.

would window sill plastic work for this ?  comes in good size lengths and is around 8mm thick , fair abrasion resistance too

I would say no,Baz,window sill plastic or fascia boards,can be quite hard wearing but they do become brittle and can shatter
