I never melt my lead in an open pan either. This can be exceptionally dangerous if there is any water droplets trapped in the lead you are melting. This can cause dangerous splattering. I always use a covered pan or mainly I use a stainless steel catering size teapot with flip top lid.

that stainless steel tea pot idea works a treat dave i tried it out the other day when i made a few sinker.
